November 2007

Since Cobb County voters approved the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, a tremendous effort has been made to accomplish the goals as established in the Transportation Improvement Projects. Nearly two years have passed since voters approved SPLOST, and its transportation projects have progressed ahead of schedule and within budget.

Cobb County Department of Transportation Director David Montanye said, “This is a remarkable accomplishment considering the process required to bring projects to construction and the unprecedented inflation over these two years.”

Cobb DOT has been busy. To date, 182 transportation projects are completed or underway. Of these projects, 63 are in the right-of-way acquisition phase and 52 projects have initiated construction; 35 of these are completed which include:
  • Six school zone improvement projects valued at $1.1 million
  • Nine bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects
  • Seven intersection safety and operational improvements
  • Resurfacing of 550 roads (124 miles) at a value of $14 million
Also of note is the design completion on the following key projects, with total project costs estimated at $12 million: Stilesboro Road, North Booth / Wooten Lake intersection, Post Oak Tritt Road and Woodlawn Drive. These projects will bid for construction by the end of 2007.

In 2008, with 30 major projects in design and approximately 50 projects planned to bid, Cobb County residents can expect to see a lot of dirt moving. Here is a closer look at some of the projects under construction on Cobb County’s roads right now and in the upcoming year:
Mulkey Road Connector
Project Map

Construction is currently underway to create a new two lane roadway from the East/West Connector to Mulkey Road connecting through Austell Road. This $2 million project will greatly improve access to the recently expanded Wellstar Cobb Hospital and relieve heavy traffic congestion in the Austell Road Corridor. Completion of this project is expected in early 2008.

Stilesboro Road
Project Map

Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the concept design this summer for much needed increase in roadway capacity. This extensive project, valued at approximately $9 million, consists of three distinct project sections along a 7.4-mile corridor of Stilesboro Road. Section one, located at Mars Hill Road to Rose Hedge Way, covers this western section from the Allatoona Creek bridge with five-lanes through the Mars Hill intersection into Brookstone. Section two from Paul Samuel Road to Pine Mountain Road will be improved by the addition of turn lanes at intersections. The third section is located at Kennesaw Due West Road to Barrett Parkway. The proposed four-lane from just west of the Kennesaw Due West intersection through the Barrett Parkway intersection will greatly reduce congestion. Completion of this project is planned for fall 2009.

Woodlawn Drive
Project Map

Woodlawn Drive can expect multiple improvements consisting of leveling of the road, connecting sidewalk gaps and significant lane adjustments to improvement access into Dickerson Middle School. The entire length of Woodlawn Drive between Lower Roswell Road to Johnson Ferry Road will be widened. Completion is planned for late 2008.

North Booth / Wooten Lake
Project Map

The two projects affecting North Booth Road and Wooten Lake Road projects will focus on the intersection improvement at Shiloh Road. Since the current intersection does not align, this project will shift North Booth Road westward to align with Wooten Lake Road. Left and right turn lanes will also be added at all approaches of the intersection and the traffic signal at Wooten Lake Road and Shiloh Road will be rebuilt. As a second phase to this project, road widening will occur on both North Booth Road and Wooten Lake Road. Completion of these projects is planned for late 2008.
