Lower Roswell Road East Safety and Operational Improvements Project
(D6140)
Last Updated Sept. 2011
Lower Roswell Road is an approved safety and operational improvements project in the 2005 Transportation Improvements Program. The proposed concept plan was presented at two Public Information Open Houses (PIOH) held on November 15, 2007 at Mt. Bethel Methodist Church and on October 22, 2008 at the East Cobb Government Center.
The project starts at the intersection of Davidson Road and extends to the intersection of Timber Ridge Road, a distance of 2.92 miles.
The concept includes: Two 11’ lanes with 4’ bike lanes on both sides and a 5’ sidewalk on the north side and 8’ wide multi-use trail on the south side. Left turn lanes will be added at key intersections.
Note:
The Board of Commissioners approved the final concept on Tuesday, January 27, 2009
As part of the approval, the concept was modified by the Board to replace the 8 ft trail with a standard 5 ft sidewalk on the south side of Lower Roswell Road. A subsequent Board of Commissioners Meeting on April 29, 2009 restored the 8 ft trail back to the project.
Concept changes were made in response to citizen input from the two PIOH meetings as well as meetings with representatives from three separate subdivisions.
These changes include:
1. Added a continuous two-way left turn lane from Davidson Road to Noble Oak Drive.
2. Right turn deceleration lanes will be re-established at St Lyonn Place and the south entrance to Waterford Green. A right turn deceleration will be added at Asheforde Drive.
3. A left turn lane will be added at Hyde Road in anticipation of the new park property and at Tally Green Drive.
4. The proposed horizontal curve at the St. Lyonn subdivision has been improved for safety.
5. The proposed roadway width in the vicinity of Waterford Green Drive and Forest Brook Parkway has been reduced by 24 feet due to eliminating the overlapping left turn lanes into each respective street..
6. The proposed multi-use trail has been reduced in width from 10 ft. to 8 ft. and the overall typical section width was reduced by an additional foot.
7. A roundabout intersection will be placed at the intersection of Lower Roswell Road, Willeo Road, and Timber Ridge Road.
This project will enhance the operational capabilities and safety of the corridor through the proposed improvements. In addition, the recreational benefits of the area will be greatly improved by providing the multi-use trail which adds another link in the County’s overall trail plan. It will provide connectivity to the Fulton County trail system eventually linking to the Azalea Drive Chattahoochee Park. The project also provides help establishing future connectivity to Johnson Ferry Road and ultimately Columns Drive.
