Big Shanty Extension
Cobb County has begun construction on the much anticipated Big Shanty Extension; a two mile long roadway designed to provide significant congestion relief for the northwest sector of Cobb County. Through the partnership of Georgia Department of Transportation, the Cobb County DOT, the Town Center Area Community Improvement District, Kennesaw State University and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Phase I began construction in January 2010, Phase III began construction in fall 2009 and phase II is scheduled for construction in 2011. The total project should be completed by 2012.

In 1998, the Town Center Area Community Improvement District, in an effort to relieve congestion on both Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway, began studying the possibilities of a new east/west corridor. Re-connecting the original Big Shanty Road, split by construction of I-75 in the mid 70’s, became the most viable alternative. The Big Shanty Extension project was developed and divided into three phases:
Phase 1 – Barrett Lakes Blvd east to George Busbee Pkwy (under I-75)
Phase 2 – Chastain Road east to Barrett Lakes
Phase 3 – George Busbee Parkway east to Chastain Meadows

When completed the project will provide an alternative to the congested Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway corridors.  The Big Shanty improvements will also include a multi-use trail on the entire length of the project providing a safe pedestrian environment for employees, Kennesaw State University students and visitors in the Town Center area.

The length of the project is 1.98 miles at a construction cost of $18,000,000.

Big Shanty Extension Phase I
Project has been let to construction by the Georgia Department of Transportation and is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2011.  The project will connect George Busbee Parkway at Big Shanty Road with Barrett Lakes Boulevard by taking the roadway under Interstate 75.  The new road will be a four lane divided roadway with a 10’ wide multi-use trail.

Big Shanty Extension Phase II
Final construction plan development and property acquisition are ongoing for Big Shanty Phase II which will connect the western end of Phase I of the extension at Barrett Lakes Boulevard to the intersection of BigShanty Road and Chastain Road.  This will be a four-lane divided roadway.  It is anticipated that the projectwill be let to construction in summer of 2010after Phase I begins construction with expected construction duration of 24 months.

Big Shanty Extension Phase III
Project has been let to construction and is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2010.  The project will consist of a four-lane divided roadway connecting Chastain Meadows Boulevard to the intersection of the eastern end of Phase I and George Busbee Parkway.  The project approximately follows the existing alignment of Big Shanty Road with minor relocations to improve horizontal and vertical alignment.

Callaway Road Improvements
The purpose of this project is to improve operations and safety along certain segments of Callaway Road. These segments are from Austell Road to Woodleigh Road, and from Al Bishop Road to Kolb Farm Way. The improvements include the addition of a continuous inside turn lane and sidewalk. Also, the Callaway Road at Austell Road intersection will be improved by increasing the storage of the left turn lanes on Austell Road, and by adding a second left turn lane from southbound Callaway Road to eastbound Austell Road.

Windy Hill/ Macland Road Connector - Project Website
The proposed roadway will connect Windy Hill Road to Macland Road and Powder Springs Road Traffic currently uses several different routes to get to and from Macland Road/Powder Springs Road and Windy Hill Road. Some of these include the use of Callaway Road, Milford Church Road and County Services Parkway, as well as some neighborhood streets as a cut-through. During the morning and evening rush hours these roadways become extremely congested. With traffic volumes expected to increase the traffic congestion during peak periods will continue to be a problem.

In order to alleviate this traffic congestion, a limited access east-west connection from Macland Road/Powder Springs Road to Windy Hill Road has been proposed by Cobb County. Cobb County allocated funds through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) for the design, right-of-way acquisition and construction of this proposed roadway.

In late October of 2006 a design consultant was contracted by Cobb County to first investigate options to connect Macland Road/Powder Springs Road to Windy Hill Road and to present these options to the public. The goal of the engineering study is to identify one preferred alignment. This is generally defined as one that will be cost effective, minimize impacts to residential and commercial properties, as well as, minimize impacts to environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands and floodplains.

A project study map has been developed that identifies three alternative alignments. This is strictly a broad brush corridor map and provides a general location for alignments that are being considered.
